While we celebrate freedom, family, and the beauty of summer in North Idaho, we’re also carrying the weight of deep loss. The tragic events of Sunday. We lost two brave men—Chiefs Jeff Harwood and Kyle Morrison—servants of our community.

And yet, in the heartbreak, something powerful emerged: unity.

In the quiet moments, in the flags lowered across town, in the prayers, the porch lights, the salutes, and the silent tears—our community came together. Grief has a way of reminding us what matters most: each other.

Our voodoo lily is in full bloom—and it smells like something crawled in and gave up. Why? This wild plant mimics the scent of rotting meat to attract flies (its pollination partners in crime). Gross? Yes. Fascinating? Also yes.

If you've been thinking about adding roses to brighten up your space and attract pollinators, there is still time to get them planted for a beautiful landscape in the spring. Roses need to be planted 6 weeks before the first frost to allow time for the roots to become established.
Here's a few tips for creating beautiful rose gardens: heavily mulch over the roots in the winter, do not prune the bushes once it starts getting cold, and companion plant dwarf salvia under the roses. Salvia plants, such as act as natural fungicide to help keep your roses black spot and mildew free. Salvia are also known to keep pests away from your roses.

We have garlic and shallot bulbs!
It's time to start planting bulbs so they are ready in the spring! We have Music and Romanian varieties, which are hardneck garlics. We also have California Early and Sicilian, which are softneck garlics

Hardneck garlic is known to have fewer cloves per bulb but they are larger. The cloves are easier to peel and are more flavorful. Hardneck garlic develop garlic scapes, which are edible and considered a delicacy. After harvesting hardneck varieties store well for 3-5 months.

Softneck garlic is known to have more cloves per bulb but they are usually smaller. The cloves are harder to peel and are more mild in flavor. The softneck garlic varieties do not develop scapes. After harvesting softneck garlic will store well for 9-12 months.

Garlic should be planted in the fall and is harvested around July 4th. After planting the garlic should be covered with straw or leaves, which is removed in the spring when the frost is done. Garlic cloves should be planted, with the papery husk on, 4-8 inches apart and 2 inches deep. If you are using raised garden beds they should be 10-12 inches deep. Once the lower leaves of the garlic begin to dry out and turn brown, the garlic should then be carefully dug up and be allowed to cure by hanging it in a well ventilated, dry place for several weeks.

These perennials will add interest and color to your landscape starting late summer through the fall. They are native to North Idaho and are a great addition to those looking to create native garden spaces. Sneezeweed does best with full sun and prefers moist, well draining soil and is resistant to many diseases. They grow 2-5 feet tall and attract many pollinators to your garden. There is still time to get these beauties established before winter arrives!

This beautiful perennial is a low maintenance flower that is typically deer and rabbit resistant due to the fragrant leaves. It is also known as the Ornamental Onion and is often used in landscaping for a border plant or to add interest. It grows about 15-20 inches high and spreads about 10-15 inches. Millennium allium is drought resistant and will tolerate most soil.
Millennium allium is a pollinator plant with long lasting blooms that attract bees and butterflies all summer long while keeping your garden colorful and full.

The plant of the week is Echinacea!

This colorful perennial is a favorite of pollinators. It is the perfect flower to add to your garden to keep the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds coming back all summer long. Echinacea is also has many medicinal uses including treating sore throats and coughs. It grows to be about 20-24 inches tall and 12-18 inches high.

Echinacea does best with full sun and well draining soil although it is tolerant to many different types of soil and can even be grown well in containers. It has few pests and is known to be deer resistant. Deadheading will prolong the blooming period and Echinacea should be pruned in late winter or early spring.

Echinacea has herbal uses that are popular around the world. It's best known for treating the common cold and flu but it is also used to treat many health issues including pain, migraines, and inflammation. The flower, leaves, and roots can be used to make tea, tinctures, capsules, throat sprays, infused oils, and infused honey.
It is a beautiful plant to add to your medicinal or homestead garden.
